John 11:35 — Jesus Wept
What Does John 11:35 Mean?
"Jesus wept." (John 11:35, NIV)
Two words. The shortest verse in the Bible. And one of the most quietly devastating things scripture ever records about Jesus. He stood at His friend Lazarus's tomb — knowing He was about to raise him from the dead — and still, He wept.
The verse undoes one of the worst lies about Christian faith: that grief is somehow a lack of trust. That tears mean you do not believe enough. Jesus knew the ending. He knew Lazarus would walk out of that tomb within minutes. And He still grieved.
It tells us something about the heart of God we cannot get from a doctrinal statement. He is not impatient with our tears. He is not annoyed by sadness. He is not waiting for us to "snap out of it." He feels it with us. He wept with Mary and Martha. He weeps with you.
John 11:35 is the verse for the days you cannot pray well. For the funerals. For the diagnoses. For the slow griefs no one else sees. The shortest verse is also the one that says: Jesus knows. He has been there. And He is still here.
