Matthew 17:20 - Faith Like a Mustard Seed

What Does Matthew 17:20 Mean?

"He replied, 'Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, "Move from here to there," and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.'" (Matthew 17:20, NIV)

The disciples had just failed to cast out a demon. They came to Jesus confused, asking why they couldn't do it. His answer wasn't what they expected. He didn't say they needed more faith. He said even the smallest amount of real faith could move mountains.

A mustard seed is tiny. Like, you could lose one between your fingers. But Jesus used it to make a point that's been hitting people for 2,000 years: it's not about how much faith you have. It's about who your faith is in.

This verse isn't a magic formula. You can't just believe hard enough and make things appear. The mountains Jesus is talking about are the obstacles, the doubts, the situations that look impossible from where you're standing. Real faith, even a small amount, placed in a God who can do anything? That changes outcomes.

If you're going through something right now that feels like a mountain, this verse is for you. You don't need perfect faith. You just need real faith.
