Proverbs 16:3 - Commit Your Work to the Lord

What Does Proverbs 16:3 Mean?

"Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and he will establish your plans." (Proverbs 16:3, NIV)

This proverb is short but it carries weight. The Hebrew word for "commit" here literally means "to roll onto." Picture yourself rolling a heavy load off your back and onto someone stronger. That's what Solomon is describing. Take whatever you're working on and hand it over to God.

The second half is the part people grab onto: "He will establish your plans." But notice the order. You don't plan first and then ask God to bless it. You commit first. You surrender the outcome. And then He shapes the path.

That's hard for anyone who likes to be in control. And honestly, most of us do. We plan our careers, our finances, our timelines. There's nothing wrong with planning. But Proverbs 16:3 says hold those plans loosely. God's version of "established" might look different from yours, and it'll be better.

If you're in a season of grinding, building something, or trying to figure out your next move, this verse is your starting point. Do the work. But roll it onto Him first.
