John 11:25 — I Am the Resurrection and the Life
What Does John 11:25 Mean?
"I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die." (John 11:25, NIV)
Jesus speaks this verse to Martha, four days after her brother Lazarus has died. She is grieving. She is also leaning on what she knows — "I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day." A correct, faithful answer. And Jesus deepens it.
He does not say He has the resurrection or teaches the resurrection. He says He IS the resurrection. The thing Martha is hoping will happen at the end of time is standing right in front of her. Eternal life is not a system or a doctrine — it is a Person.
And then He puts the question to her directly: "Do you believe this?" That is the question of the whole gospel. Not whether you understand the theology. Not whether you can argue the case. Whether you believe Him — the One making the claim.
John 11:25 is the verse to carry into every funeral, every late-night doubt, every season where the grave seems to win. It says: the One who has the keys to death is here. He is not coming later. He is the resurrection now.
